I stumbled on this poem a year ago, maybe two. It may do nothing for you, but for me, at the time, standing there in the bookstore reading it, it was like the world went away, like I couldn't breathe. It just resonated, just really clicked and meant something to me.

"Things"

What happened is, we grew lonely
living among the things,
so we gave the clock a face,
the chair a back,
the table four stout legs
which will never suffer fatigue.

We fitted our shoes with tongues
as smooth as our own
and hung tongues inside bells
so we could listen
to their emotional language,

and because we loved graceful profiles
the pitcher received a lip,
the bottle a long, slender neck.

Even what was beyond us
was recast in our image;
we gave the country a heart,
the storm an eye,
the cave a mouth
so we could pass into safety.

Lisel Mueller

___

    <lj:music>Bob Schneider - Oklahoma</lj:music>

Thursday (otherwise known as Dean Winchester's birthday, lol) I celebrated my own birthday a little early with Barb. She took me out to dinner, which was fantastic. We talked about this, that, and the other thing, and we ended up laughing at how wonderful and simultaneously dreadful fandom can be.

After dinner we sat and listened to Larry Murante play at Crossroads. The guy has quite the voice on him. He's this terrific mixture of Colin Hay and Bruce Hornsby with an extra bit oomph that's all his own.

When the musical portion of the evening was over we wandered around Barnes and Noble misbehaving and being generally silly. You know how a group of lions is a pride, a group of crows is a murder, and a group of bears is a sleuth? Well, since we couldn't find a decent description of a collection of jellyfish (most books just called them jellies, boooring) we've decided a group of jellyfish from here on out shall be known as a smucker of jellyfish. Go on, use it, you know you want to. ;)

Yesterday, my actual birthday was very mellow. I conned Kyle into marathoning a bunch of Supernatural with me before he had to work. Mostly I just spent the day receiving well wishes from family and friends, which was pretty wonderful. Thanks guys. :D

This morning I dragged myself out bed (I just didn't sleep well for whatever reason last night) and chauffeured Kyle to work. At the moment I'm cleaning the place up a bit because I have friends from Wisconsin (Kelly and Kim) flying in later this morning. They'll be here all week but aren't here exclusively just to visit me, they have another friend out here and they'll be staying with her. I'll be tagging along with their sightseeing here and there when possible.

Barb, if you're reading this, I still expect to hang with you whenever you've free time this week. There's no escaping it, just consign yourself to it now. :P

Have a great weekend everybody. :)

****

At least that's what I told Barb after we saw "Cloverfield" last night. Kyle, Barb, and I went to an earlier showing yesterday evening, and let me just say, "wow". Okay, admittedly I am a bit of a Abrams fanboy, but honestly, impartially, this was a terrific flick. The story was well crafted and the actors did a wonderful job of drawing me in. As for the scary stuff (of which there is much), it was genuinely scary. I'm not easily freaked out by movies, but I was covering my eyes repeatedly and squirming in my theatre seat. Even after the film was over and I was home safe and sound, the hairs on the back of my neck continued to prickle. Good times people, good times. :D

****

    <lj:music>Reliant K - I'm Gettin' Nuttin' For Christmas</lj:music>

Three a.m. Christmas eve I woke up to the reality that a wicked-bad cold had taken possession of me while I had slept. Due to general misery I got up and stayed up. I worked what felt like 7 and a half weeks (really, it was just 6 to 2:30), and then walked over to the drug store to see if there was anything that might alleviate some of the copious yuck I was feeling. Shortly thereafter, Barb showed up, so that I could follow her to her place. Out here in Washington I can get to work and back and not much else, hence the need for me to be lead.

Christmas eve at Barb's was fun despite my cold getting worse and worse. I was able to ignore what the stupid germs were doing to me, because it was just nice to have fun, and company, and be with a good friend for the holiday. Barb's cat Chai even sort of made friends with me, which was cool. Sadly, Macchi never came out of hiding, but she's super shy and a bit of a scaredy cat, so yeah.

I went home Christmas eve night and died...no, wait...it just felt like I died. When I woke up Christmas day I made some coffee and had some of that cold relief stuff and felt okay-ish for a few hours, but by late morning I was beginning to realize I did not have a cold, nope, what I had was the flu. I spent Christmas day lying on the floor in my living room on a pile of blankets, covered by another pile of blankets watching "Wonderfalls" on dvd (which I can't recommend enough. It's pure magic, people!) while getting sicker and sicker (I apologize if sicker isn't a real and proper word, whether it is or not, for the purposes of this post I'm using it).

Thursday I was supposed to work, but I called in instead. I never call in. I think only once in the last couple years have I called in, and that was on account of a migraine that sent me to the ER. So yes, I was really really miserable. Despite not wanting to move, or breathe, or anything that day I was out of medicine and almost out of Kleenex, so I forced myself to go out and get stuff, only to crumple back into a pile on the floor when I returned.

Yesterday I had off, which was for the best, because I was still very very ill, but there were good things about yesterday as well. I finished watching all of "Wonderfalls". I finally saw the season finale (unless the writer's strike ends and it comes back for more) of "Heroes". I caught up on some of the "My Name is Earl" from this season (Don't judge me. I like the show, alright? It's silly & stupid, and moral & sweet all at the same time. I like it, so please just get over it, thanks. :P ) Best of all, I got to watch the "Dr. Who Christmas Special: Voyage Of The Damned". It. Was. AMAZING. So yeah, there was a bit of good mixed in with the crappiness.

Today, I work. I close. I'm still not feeling the greatest, but I'm miles away from how bad I've been the last two days. I just need to get through this evening, and then I have tomorrow off.

I really need to find a post office, or a FedEx place, or UPS, or whatever, so I can send my box of Christmas gifts to my mom. She's going to play santa and divvy out the gifts to all my family back home.

Kyle shows up next week, so I've also got to get directions to and back from Seatac. It was disastrous (to put it politely) last time for me, so I'm seriously hoping to make this trip to the airport and back as painless as possible.

I guess I'm still fairly cloudy and out of it, because I can't think of anything else to say or how to end this post. Basically, if you read all this, well thanks for taking the time to listen, and I hope you're doing well as the New Year approaches.

Peace and Love Folks,

Red

****

Last night I reminded mom that Supernatural was going to be new, and that she best watch it. While we were on the phone she was all, "Ooo this looks like a scary one...(wait for it)...oh wait, they're all scary" *shakes head and laughs* Oh how I love you, Mom. I let her go so she could focus on watching it, but half way through she calls me to tell me, "Oh you're really gonna like this one a lot, it's a good one" and then "But have some kleenex handy". Get you're minds out of the gutter people, she meant it had the potential to be a tearjerker. :P

So mom's pretty accurate with what will and won't affect me.

[This next bit's cut for spoilers, not that's they're particularly spoilery, but you never know, you know?]

At the end, when Dean returns and the place is decked out (well as decked out as a seedy motel room can be on a budget of zero dollars) and the boys talk and exchange presents (although Dean clearly wasn't expecting to, hence him giving Sammy what he had just picked up for himself, but it was the gesture itself, so yeah), that whole bit right there. It made me cry.

I miss home so much that I actively work against thinking, all day everyday, otherwise I would simply wallow in how much I dislike it here and how much I truly long to go home.

I miss my brothers. Parker's got a girl he likes right now, and I can't even meet her. Josh is doing well in school and just got a new job. Christopher's plugging along finishing up school and figuring out whether he wants to travel some before or after grad school. I miss my brothers...and that stupid show I love made me cry for that exact reason.

Life here so far has been a long succession of unbelievably uncool things happening to me day after day. I'm gonna skip all the bad stuff. It feels indulgent and unnecessary to go on about all that, and honestly, the list of things would have most people thinking I was making it up, because realistically, no one's luck is this bad...well, almost no one's. *shrugs*

The brighter than bright spot here is Barb. When I talk to Barb on the phone, or get a chance to hang out with her it reminds me of all the good stuff in life, and everything makes sense, at least for a little while. Thank God for Barb. She took me to this extremely cool little restaurant the other day. They cut their own fries, they bake their own bread, and they make the best BLTs EVER! Thank you, Barb, thanks for always being awesome.

But back to Supernatural, To me this episode was like cake, like a present, like something I really needed right now. I loved everything about it. In the end though, Kripke and those Winchester boys owe me, because they went and made me miss my own brothers even more.

In happier news, I should be getting a care package from mom today (yay! comic books!), and tomorrow Barb and I are hanging out, so, you know, good times-good times. :)

How are all of you doing? I seriously want to know.

****

...forget Shakespeare, forget Macbeth, I'm talking about Dr. Who! Dr. Who Season 3 comes out on dvd tomorrow, and I'm excited like a little puppy. :D

Other news. I sprained or possible broke my hand/wrist yesterday while packing. Yes, I realize, I am many kinds of lame. Oh wait, Barb told me tell everyone I got this in a fist fight like Jared. Yeah, forget what I previously said, what I meant was, I sprained and or broke my wrist in a fist fight yesterday, yeah that's what happened, um clearly. I visit the doc in an hour or so to see if there's anything they can do to make it less painful. So basically, that's that.

I have indeed found and acquired a new apartment *trumpets sound and the villagers cheer!*, much to the credit of Barb, who plays the role of eyes and ears for me 'til I get to Washington later this month. You are tremendously stupendous, B, I just cannot thank you enough. <3

I also bought my plane ticket yesterday. It's funny how having a plane ticket purchased makes this whole move suddenly real for me. It's odd the things that click for a person.

I have been packing up stuff like a mad man and my mom has been a huge help. She likes to play the roll of box taper. She's a menace with that roll of packaging tape in her hands, and I love her for it.

Mel, your package goes out today or tomorrow, depending on my doctor's appointment and work, but rest assured it goes out today or tomorrow, and no later than that.

Maygra, I sent out a package to you, keep your eyes peeled for it some time this week. When I packed it, I accidentally set aside half of the things that were meant to go to you, and realized this after I got home from Fed Ex, so you have another package coming to you shortly. *is dork*

Okay, that's all the time I have for chatting. I hope you folks are good (Max, feel better baby, okay?)

Peace & Love,

Red

[Update]
So as I was driving to my doctor's appointment I started taking my bandage off (yes as I was driving :P ), and I decided that, though it is still very sore, my wrist is not broken or anything of the kind, and therefore not worth wasting my doctor's or my time.

Before anyone lectures me, let me just say, I'll be fine, honest. ;)
